Photographer Lucy focused on sharing ideas with young entrepreneurs

HIGHLY MOTIVATED: Lucy Johnson

A photographer who takes a storytelling approach to her art is embarking on a new chapter in her career as a mentor with an organisation which has helped her turn her passion into a business.

Lucy Johnson specialises in wedding photography but with a difference. From the first shot she has remained determined to stand out by staying true to her creative strengths – focusing on authentic, candid storytelling rather than traditional approaches.

Her social media sets the standard: Northern Documentary Wedding Photographer, captured - not manufactured, posed is out - personality is in, candid, wildly fun!

Lucy was first introduced to Making Changes for Careers (MC4C) in March 2025 after meeting a member of the team at a community setting drop-in session. At that point, Lucy had already begun offering photography services to friends and family as a way to build her portfolio.

Driven by a clear passion for working within the wedding industry, Lucy was also volunteering her time to shadow experienced photographers at weddings. From the outset, she had a strong vision for her work and a clear understanding of the style she wanted to develop.

She said: “I like documentary-style images that portray the special day in the most natural way possible. There is definitely a market for my idea. Most wedding photographers within the industry offer traditional images that are posed, scripted and planned – this is something that I avoid.”

Highly motivated to develop her skills further, Lucy self-funded her place at a wedding photography workshop with industry experts at a cost of £350.

It was a significant personal investment but, having experienced the benefits, she was keen to continue learning and carry out more workshops with MC4C.

In July 2025, Lucy successfully applied to for a Test Market Grant of £538.98 from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. The funding enabled her to attend an additional training masterclass and purchase essential equipment, including new camera batteries, which helped her to work more efficiently and professionally at events.

Since completing the MC4C workshops, Lucy has remained in regular contact with her advisor, providing updates on her business progress.

She initially set her package prices at a lower rate to attract clients and build her portfolio but, as her experience and demand have grown, she has confidently increased her prices.

Lucy is now receiving regular bookings and has secured wedding photography work right through to 2027 – a fantastic achievement and a testament to her dedication, talent and clear creative vision.

Satisfied clients have taken to social media with their testimonials.

“We hated the idea of having stiff/artificial photos and Lucy is exactly what we were looking for! She's taken so many beautiful photos of our friends and family having the best time celebrating with us and she's captured so many little moments that we wouldn't have pictures of if we'd have gone with a traditional photographer. We'll definitely cherish our photos forever.”

“From first contact to the end of the night Lucy was amazing. She instantly calmed my nerves, felt like an old friend being there to help me with my big day. She was incredible with my daughter when I was so busy getting ready. There was not a moment missed by Lucy, she must have taken thousands of pictures that day and night and the way she got the candid shots that no one else thought to capture is exactly why we chose her for our special day.”

Lucy has now agreed to become a mentor for the MC4C programme, where she is able to pass on the skills, knowledge and experiences she gained during her own time on the programme.

This decision was inspired by the significant support and guidance she received from her own mentor, whose advice played a key role in her personal and professional development.

Wanting to give back and support others in the same way, Lucy also took the initiative to plan and deliver her own workshop.

She shared her personal journey with a new cohort of MC4C participants, offering insight, encouragement, and practical advice to help them navigate their own experiences on the programme.
