Slater Street: St Stephen’s names walkway after Hull City star

“Fifty-grand, fifty-grand, Regan Slater!”, is the gleeful lyric Hull City fans sing in honour of the star midfielder and the knockdown price the club paid Sheffield United for his services.

It looks a better bargain with each passing season – and a deal only enhanced by Slater’s commanding performance against Premier League giants Manchester United on Saturday, when he provided the set-piece deliveries for both goals to secure an historic first league win against the Red Devils for 52 years.

Any fans wanting to further bask in the midfield dynamo’s glory can now visit St Stephen’s shopping centre, where a walkway has been renamed Slater Street. A Tiger Leisure store is nearby.

Slater was nominated by fans after St Stephen’s invited supporters to put forward their favourite Tigers player to have the walkway renamed in their honour following the Championship play-off final win in May.

The signage was installed ahead of City’s opening top-flight fixture against United as a good luck gesture to the team.

It certainly paid off.

Jim Harris, centre manager at St Stephen’s, said: “We wanted to give Hull City fans the chance to be involved in acknowledging such a monumental time for the Tigers and it’s been great to see the community take part in our competition.

“Slater Street is a deserving winning name, with Regan Slater a key team player – as he demonstrated during this weekend’s brilliant match. We’re excited to see what else this season has in store for Hull City, continuing to watch and hopefully celebrate with our local community!”
