Harry Potter fans can immerse themselves in the magical world of Hogwarts on Sunday when live owls provide a wild backdrop for a dazzling performance of film and festive favourites by Hull Philharmonic Orchestra.

Only a “handful” of tickets remain for the Music, Magic and Mystery concert at Hull City Hall, when John Williams’ sparkling Symphonic Suite from Harry Potter will top the bill, which will also feature enduring classics including Howard Blake’s The Snowman Suite, Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite, and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.

The event is attracting an audience of families and young people from across the city and beyond to experience the joy of familiar classical music in a fun, informal and ‘wild’ setting.

FIRST CONCERT: Hull Phil’s new musical director and conductor Simon Chalk

The experience will include a display of owls in the venue’s Victoria Bar courtesy of York Bird of Prey Centre.

Danny Elfman’s freakishly fun This is Halloween arrangement for orchestra, Mussorgsky’s perilous A Night on the Bare Mountain, Saint Saëns’ entrancing Danse Macabre are other pieces in the what will be a memorable programme.

Flamboyant fancy dress is being encouraged as people are invited to come along as their favourite character, while looks will be uplifted with face painting from local experts Fantastic Faces.

It is the first official concert in the tenure of the new Hull Philharmonic’s musical director and conductor Simon Chalk, who was selected to head up the leading regional orchestra following stiff competition for the high-profile role.

Long-term supporter of the orchestra, Williamsons Solicitors, has provided sponsorship to help with discounted under 16s tickets for the event. The regional law firm also provides a home for the orchestra’s substantial music library.

The concert starts at 4pm with face painting available from 3pm. Remaining tickets are available here.
