A Hull boxer has secured an international title in New York after a standout performance.

Saul Matchett, representing Vulcan Boxing Club in Hull, travelled to the United States to compete on the highly regarded Strong Island Fight Night - Next Up Boxing League, a promotion known for showcasing top amateur talent from across America.

The event, led by experienced promoter Kristian Vasquez, is widely respected for delivering a professional-style boxing platform.

Saul contested the International Belt at 154lbs against popular Brooklyn fighter Josh Marquez of Pro Fit Boxing Gym, in what proved to be an exciting and competitive bout.

Supported in New York by Brotherhood Boxing Club and coach Pedro Montalvo, Saul delivered a composed and confident performance. He took control of the first two rounds, with the third round more closely contested as both fighters exchanged heavy shots.

All five judges scored the bout in Saul’s favour, awarding him a unanimous decision victory.

Supporters back in Hull stayed up until after 2am to watch the fight via live stream.

Saul said: “It was an incredible experience to fight in New York against a strong opponent.

“I’m grateful for the support both out there and back home - it means a lot.”

Vulcan Boxing coach Sebastian Glazer said: “Saul’s talent is homegrown, he has dedicated years of hard work to his sport and this marks his 32nd contest, adding to an already impressive amateur career that has seen him compete internationally in Portugal and Greece.

“He is now setting his sights on turning professional within the next 12 months.”
