Firefighters have rescued an adventurous deer that became stuck in a garden pond.

The animal was spotted in the 5ft-deep pond in Willerby on Wednesday morning, with a specialist crew from Calvert Lane Fire Station arriving at 8.32am.

Firefighters wearing protective clothing entered the pond and managed to lift the deer out safely using water rescue equipment. It was then released back into the wild apparently unharmed.

In a Facebook post, Humberside Fire & Rescue Service said: “Our crew from Calvert Lane Fire Station recently came to the aid of a deer that had wandered into a five-foot-deep garden pond.

“Thanks to their quick work the deer was safely rescued and returned to the wild. Great teamwork and a happy ending for this unexpected visitor!”

Builders of garden ponds are encouraged to create steps or a slope at one end so animals of all sizes can access the water safely.
