Peter Mandelson should be stripped of his title of High Steward of Hull, according to the leader of the city council.

Councillor Mike Ross, along with the leader of the council’s Labour Group, Councillor Daren Hale, and the council’s Independent Group, have jointly called for Lord Mandelson to have the title removed.

It comes after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer sacked Lord Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the US, following mounting scrutiny over his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

In a statement, Coun Ross said: “In light of recent developments, with agreement from the other political groups on the council, we will put forward a motion at next week’s full council meeting calling for the High Steward role to be removed from Lord Mandelson.”

The full council meeting takes place on Thursday, September 18.
