Council jobs boost with 70 new posts created in waste management

FIND OUT MORE: A recruitment event is being held on Saturday

By Simon Bristow, Co-Editor

A total of 70 new jobs are available at Hull City Council’s waste management team.

The recruitment drive in the Streetscene Services department comes ahead of a national rollout of the Simpler Recycling initiative in March 2026.

This requires all local authorities to collect core recyclable waste streams from all households – including weekly food waste collections – and the jobs are intended to help the council meet the increased demand and improve service delivery.

The authority has vacancies for 60 loader positions and ten driver / chargehand roles.

Anyone wanting to apply or find out more is invited to a recruitment event at Staveley House Stockholm Road from 10am and to 1pm this Saturday, October 4.

This event – organised in partnership with the council’s Employment Hub – will give potential recruits the chance to meet staff from the waste and recycling team, explore the vehicles used in daily operations, and learn more about the roles available.

Councillor Charles Quinn, the council’s portfolio holder for environment, said: “Simpler Recycling marks a significant step forward in how we manage waste across the city. By recruiting and training new staff now we’re ensuring Hull is ready to meet these new standards.

“I encourage anyone interested to come along and find out more about joining our dedicated waste team.”

For support with applications contact the Employment Hub via email employmenthub@hullcc.gov.uk, or call 01482 616623.

Successful applicants will start training in January 2026.
