Hull City forward Ryan Longman has called Tuesday’s shock home defeat to Barnsley a “blip” and a “bad day in the office” as the Tigers look to get back on track against Grant McCann’s Peterborough on Saturday.

City fans are licking their wounds and scratching their heads after the 2-0 loss to the Championship’s bottom team midweek, disappointing in many ways but not least for being witnessed by a crowd of 16,421 - the club’s biggest home gate for four years.

The fixture list has now thrown up the tantalising prospect of a trip to London Road on Saturday to face former manager McCann’s new side, just days after he was appointed, and weeks after he was shown the door at the MKM Stadium by the new regime under new City owner Acun Ilıcalı.

The Tigers will travel as favourites, with strugglers Posh lying just one place above Barnsley.

Asked about the defeat to the Tykes at an online press conference today, Longman said: “It was a bad day in the office for everyone, especially myself. I’m really disappointed about how I played, but it’s all [about] character now to come back, bounce back from that, and obviously look towards Peterborough and getting the three points and getting the job done.”

Longman, who has impressed this season, upgraded his loan deal from Brighton to a three-and-a-half-year contract at the MKM during the January transfer window, a move he said he was delighted about.

He revealed had had spoken to McCann following his Tigers exit and thanked him for bringing him to the club.

He said: “With Grant bringing me to Hull, can’t thank him enough, giving me the opportunities, sticking by me.”

Asked about facing his former boss again so soon, Longman said: “Yeah, it’s football isn’t it? It just seems like there’s always these weird circumstances round the corner; you just don’t know what football’s gonna throw at you.”
