BAFTA winner Robert Aramayo unveils his new KCOM ‘Hometown Hero’ phone box

‘GREAT CHOICE’: Robert Aramayo with his cream phone box on Holderness Road, Hull

By Rick Lyon, Co-Editor

Acclaimed actor Robert Aramayo is the latest KCOM ‘Hometown Hero’ to unveil a classic cream phone box named in his honour.

Robert, who recently won a BAFTA for his performance in the British film I Swear, visited his dedicated K6 kiosk on Holderness Road, east Hull. While there, he stepped inside to take a phone call from his dad, Mike, who was stood outside.

Robert said: “It’s great, isn’t it!? I grew up around here and I remember walking down this street to get my bus to school – and now there’s a phone box with a picture of me on the corner. It’s mad really, isn’t it?!

“I’m really lucky to be from Hull, and really proud of the city. It’s such a beautiful place to be from, and the people here are so down to earth and supportive. So, thank you to everyone who nominated me.”

Mike added: “I’m so, so proud of him. To be voted for by the people of Hull first for the BAFTA Rising Star Award and now for this is amazing.

“I’m saving the number to my phone, maybe he could use it as his office when he’s back in town!”

PROUD: Robert taking a call from his dad

Robert was chosen as one of KCOM’s nine Hometown Heroes recently after a campaign to honour inspirational figures from Hull and East Yorkshire. Each of the winners will now have one of the city’s famous cream K6 boxes named after them, as part of celebrations to mark the kiosks’ 90th anniversary.

Former Malet Lambert School pupil Robert was also named as a patron of Tourette’s Syndrome Inclusion in the Community (TIC Yorkshire) – a charity supporting people living with Tourette’s Syndrome and Tic disorders.

Tourette’s Awareness Month 2026 starts on Friday, May 15, and aims to raise awareness of the conditions that were highlighted in I Swear.

KCOM’s director of corporate affairs, Susan Adams, said: “Robert is a fantastic ambassador for Hull and a true inspiration to everyone following in his footsteps, dreaming of a career in acting or the creative industries.

“He’s a great choice to be one of our Hometown Heroes and now a patron of TIC Yorkshire. Wherever his career takes him around the world, he’ll know there’s always a phone box-shaped corner of Hull with his name on it!”

Kim Mitchell, CEO of TIC, said: “We’re proud to have Robert representing Hull and Tourette’s on the big screen – and as our patron.

“Seeing him on a local phone box is the icing on the cake.”
