A section of the A63 in the city centre will close for 28 consecutive nights in the new year as work on the £355m National Highways upgrade of Castle Street nears its spring completion.

Hull’s biggest infrastructure project, which began in March 2020, will see the creation of a new split-level junction at Mytongate by lowering the A63 to create an underpass, with Ferensway and Commercial Road crossing the A63. Pedestrian and cycling routes will also be improved.

Work on the scheme, which is expected to be completed in spring 2026 – a year later than planned – will stop between December 20 and January 4.

Part of the A63 will then be closed in both directions every night from 8pm to 6am between January 5 and February 1.

In a project update on its website, National Highways said: “Work is progressing on the split-level junction at Mytongate with ongoing overnight closures planned into the new year.

“The next phases are focused on the roadworks for the scheme and a lot of the technology we now need to install, including:

  • the remaining lighting

  • electronic message boards

  • traffic signals

  • new signage.

“We’ve also been working on drainage, along with significant planting and landscaping.

“Work in the main underpass has included the installing of ninety-six pre-cast brick wall panels to the side of the underpass, work on the bridge deck, and creating the new central barrier.”

In December last year the agency announced it had extended the anticipated completion date for the project due to ground conditions “that could not have been anticipated before the scheme began”.
